Artificial Grass 101: Everything You Need to Know

Artificial grass, also known as synthetic turf, has become increasingly popular for its low maintenance and aesthetic appeal. Artificial grass has come a long way in its look and feel since its first introduction to Orange County homeowners about 20 plus years ago. When selecting artificial grass, various factors come into play, including height, color and face weight, each contributing to the overall look and performance of the turf.

Firstly, the height of the artificial grass blades is a crucial consideration. Heights typically range from short to tall, with common options being 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches. Shorter blades offer a neat and manicured appearance, resembling freshly mowed natural grass. On the other hand, taller blades provide a lush, more natural look, mimicking the texture of traditional lawns. The choice of height depends on the personal preference and the desired aesthetic for the outdoor space.

Color is another key element influencing the visual impact of artificial grass. Wilson Greens offers a spectrum of greens shades to replicate the diversity found in organic lawns. Vibrant greens with brown thatch create a realistic appearance, whole some variants incorporate a mic of olive or lime tones for added dimension. The selection of color is often influenced by the surrounding environment and the specific ambiance one wishes to achieve in their outdoor area. The natural look and feel of artificial grass has evolved to the point that most people from a distance, or even sometimes up close, can’t tell if its natural or artificial!

Face weight is another important factor that influences the density and durability of artificial grass. It refers to the amount of materials used per square yard. A higher face weight generally indicates a denser and more robust turf. For high-traffic areas or spaces where the grass will endure heavy use, opting for a higher face weight can contribute to a longer lifespan and improved resilience. Conversely, lower face weights are suitable for less frequented areas or places where a softer feel is desired.

Beyond these primary considerations, technological advancements have led to innovative variations in artificial grass. Some products incorporate features like UV resistance to prevent color fading under sunlight, drainage systems for efficient water runoff, and cooling technologies to reduce heat absorption. These advancements enhance the overall performance and longevity of synthetic grass.

In addition to traditional green options, artificial grass now comes in various colors and textures to cater to diverse preferences. Homeowners can choose from alternatives like blue or red artificial grass for a unique and eye-catching landscape. One of our favorite projects was installing artificial grass inside a gym and using brown, white and black turf to represent the company logo. The business owner was so excited when he found out we could embed his logo into the green grass!

The variations in artificial grass, encompassing height, color and face weight, provide Orange County homeowners with a range of options to customize their outdoor living space. Whether aiming for a manicured, low-maintenance lawn or a lush, natural aesthetic, understanding these factors is essential in selecting the most suitable synthetic turf for your yard.
